It is the *only* program on my machine that is just as slow as it used to be, and now that the rest of the system is a little snappier it feels like it has degraded.

I just did a fresh install of 10.6 and have been quite happy with the speed boost - except for iTunes. I haven't tried doubletwist yet, but I am absolutely dying to get rid of iTunes. I've read Ars for years and this is the first time I've been compelled to post. How big is your music library? The import process may still have been running in the background sucking up CPU.

The beachball came back many times while we were using the software, resulting in general slowness and annoyance. Clicking between Music and the Music Store, for example, frequently resulted in a beachball on a 2.4GHz iMac with 4GB of RAM-something that would never happen on iTunes itself.

This is mentioned in the supported devices section on our website.quote:Our other observation about the interface was that switching between items was often quite slow.

Anything special about your setup?quote:Though it doesn't appear to recognize the iPhone (that's the device I have plugged in that it can't seem to identify correctly) The iPhone is not supported in the Mac version. View image: Even if you don't import your iTunes playlists, they should still be visible in media browser when browsing the iTunes source: View image: If they're not showing up in the media browser then there's a bug with reading your iTunes library. You can also trigger it from the File menu -> Library -> Import iTunes playlists. Are you saying the playlist import feature did not import any playlists? Note that Playlist Setup view below is only available when you don't have playlists yet in doubleTwist.

The software isn’t perfect by any means just yet and the bugs will put some people off, but I think this is really good and makes using the phone as a portable media player much more user friendly. The media is also resized automatically when importing so the quality is reduced, and even though this allows you to put more on to your phone, an option to choose the quality size would be good. Perhaps the most annoying thing for me is that the media is sometimes put into alphabetical order or even a random order, as far as I can tell, which messes up the running order of albums–an option to change this would go down well. If you use iTunes then this will be very familiar to you, although the navigation could do with some improvement. There are plenty of other features, such as importing from YouTube. I would recommend spending a bit of time with the software to get the most out of it. When I did my initial synching with my PC’s media it also imported my iTunes playlists, which was nice as I didn’t have to re-do them if I wanted to use them. Just remember to select the playlists to sync and then click “sync†once you make changes.

Add an item to the playlist and it transfers it to your phone remove an item from the playlist and it removes it from your phone. Once you have set your playlists up you then sync the chosen playlists to the phone and hey presto, it syncs the changes to those playlists. This is done by right clicking the media and choosing “Add to Playlist†and the the playlist you want to send it to. When it came to managing media I created 3 playlists (G1 Music, G1 Pics and G1 Videos) and sent the relevant media I wanted to transfer to my phone to each of those playlists through doubleTwist.

The navigation can be a bit of a pain and the whole experience can be a bit slow now and then but this is still a beta release and should expect some teething problems. This can take some time if you have a lot of media but once it has done it you then have access to all of it from within the software. Once you install doubleTwist, you point it in the direction of your music, pictures and videos on your PC/Mac where it scans those locations.
